Time To Sign For It, Finally

certificate

Today I finalized my paperwork for the State of South Carolina and officially became the “managing member” of Wingspan Marketing LLC located in Summerville, SC. WOOHOO!!!

It has been a crazy road so far to get to this point but I believe I’m ready to take this new challenge in my life. I have to say that credit is not do to me or anyone else but my Savior. I would have never made these decisions without Him guiding every step of the way. Sometimes it felt like He was smacking my legs to stay on track while others He seemed to be carrying me on His broad shoulders. Ether way, I just wanted to make sure everyone knew that Wingspan Marketing LLC and every project it produces is only done because of a loving and caring God.

That being said, it was still an incredible feeling to walk into the bank today with my 4 year old, Matthew, and sign the paperwork to open up my business account. Proud, would be a good word to describe it.

In 2007, when I was asked by the Pastor to head up the website ministry I would have never dreamed that I would be doing web development full time.

I know many people have had their LLC since they were 3 and this really isn’t that big of a deal to them. That is just it though, it is a big deal to ME and my family. I can see how this will give me a platform to work from.

I feel as if I am wearing spikes for the first time on a wet golf course or cleats on a freshly watered soccer field. The traction that this paperwork seems to give me is just what I needed to take the next step.

Even bigger things are in the works than I had ever previously thought were possible.

3 Key Keyword Placements

The Key To Success

There are 3 necessary places to have your keyword placed in your blog articles and pages. This is a practice that you must consciously take advantage of. These 3 areas will be doing the heavy lifting for your blog or website’s SEO.

Although these are natural areas where the main idea of your page or article would be found there is always some tweaking that can be done to make it more apparent to those reading and search engines who are trying to determine your main idea.

1. At the beginning of the page URL. This is also called the slug or webpage address. It is important to have a URL that is small, simple and keyword rich. That doesn’t mean you should repeat your words over and over again but it does mean to be purposeful with how close you place the keyword(s) you are trying to communicate to the front of the name.

2. In the first 140 characters of your content. If you don’t have a specific plugin or “description generator” then your first 140 characters in your content will determine what shows up in the description under the blog title in SERP (Search Engine Results Page). This will yield better results in the SERPs and also higher click throughs.

3. In the last paragraph or 50 words of your content. This naturally happens when you write a good article. It never hurts to carefully consider it when writing an article even though it should be natural. Placing your keyword in the last part of the article/content is naturally done by reviewing the main points of your article.

A good article may automatically do that but it doesn’t intentionally do it. That is where the mistakes come in. Maybe you rabbit trailed and your content became a long dialogue about everything instead of what you had originally intended to write about. This is where a purposeful attempt at placing your keyword in your article will really help your all around SEO.

Having good keyword placement on your website is as important as placing a neon sign on a busy street. It should help direct people to understand your message.

Did Google Fail Or Get Better?

caveman-google

Black hat SEO has always been around. I’m sure there were cavemen businessmen who secretly carved over a competing companies stone engraving or added a mustache to a companies advertisement on the public restroom wall. It’s pretty much the same difference.

You may have seen the article over the weekend, or maybe you didn’t. JC Penny was caught in an elaborate black hat SEO link scheme.

Consistency

It is important to target your site to reach your goals with proper keyword or keyphrase structure. If you have a specific target in mind then a good site design is not going to be enough to bring in the visitors your looking for.

Using WordPress or any other open source platform allows for some pretty incredible results as far as design goes. What use to take thousands of dollars to develop properly is now next to nothing.

Keep in mind however, that search engines still have to go by page information as it sees it. For example: a flash or image base navigation system is great on the eyes but not on the bots. There are several key areas to focus on when developing your site.

That is why it is so important to optimize your pages with a specific list of things to focus on. The most important parts of your page are going to be title, text and headings in the body, and image alt and link anchor texts.

I have a program called WebCEO that checks all these parameters and gives you a listed report that will walk you through some of the most important on-page-optimization suggestions.

I am offering this report for FREE to help get you started.
Not only will you get a list of important items to change on your page but I will also add a few of my personal observations about some other things you can do to help improve your pages results in the search engines.

If you are interested in this free personalized Page Keyword Analysis Report simply leave a comment below with your keyword or phrase and the URL of the page your wanting to get the report on.

I will try to get your report done and emailed back to you in a short amount of time.

Divine Crosses Moves Up

divinecrosses-home

DivineCrosses.com is a local woodworking company that specializes in handmade wooden crosses. Brad Geoghagan is a seventh generation wood craftsman. He has an incredible talent for woodwork. His hands on method of doing things allowed him to develop a website for his custom handmade crosses site but it was having trouble being found int he search engines.

He contacted me through a mutual friend and wanted to know if I could help him. We talked over breakfast one morning a Denny’s (I’m not lying about that) and got to work.

DivineCrosses.com was one of the very first clients I took on in my SEO career, outside of Burgess Road Baptist. It was interesting to talk with Brad and find the incredible passion he had for his work and the desire to promote his business online.

Our keywords were based on quality results not just traffic numbers. We generated a list of keywords like “custom handmade crosses”, “handmade wooden crosses”, and “custom wooden crosses”. This list translated into quality traffic on the site. It took a little over 6 months to start seeing solid results but after that it just took off.

Foundations Of A New Website

Foundations of a new website

[This is the introduction to a series on going through some "Foundations Of A New Website". It is designed to help guide you through some of the fundamental questions you need to answer when you begin developing a new property online.]

When you develop an online presence, either from scratch or redesign, there are critical key aspects to consider at the beginning of the development process. These should be considered even before getting started with the new design.

It’s been stated over and over again that creating an online property is not a “build it and they will come” type situation. Most of the work of a successful web presence takes place after the “publish” button is pushed. But there are several things in the very beginning of the process that can make or break your success.

3 SEO predictions for 2011

I’ve heard over and over again that 2011 is the year of the SEO. (I’ve also heard it’s the year of the donkey, moon pies, and Apple. But I’ll save those for another article.) When Life Principles Meet SEO: Whiteboard Friday @SEOmoz (Video)

I am seeing some great value from SEOmoz‘s WhiteBoard Friday’s. My take away from today’s video was a step back to the original intent of life: True Relationships. I know it seems a little deep for me to be taking away something that heavy from a simple video on SEO, but, go ahead and watch the video and see if you come to the same conclusion I have.
I’ll tell you what conclusion I’ve come to after the video…
